On 4 November 2016, the first of two chapter Rurouni Kenshin spinoff manga titled Rurouni Kenshin Ibun: Ashitarō Zenka Ari (Rurouni Kenshin Variant Story: The Criminal Ashitarō) has been released in the December issue of Shueisha's Jump Square magazine.
This spinoff manga is a project that created by Nobuhiro Watsuki who draw the manga and his wife Kaoru Kurosaki who create the story.The manga tells story about Ashitarō Hasegawa, a criminal who live in the Tokyo prison. After out from prison he meet Aran Inoue, a boy his age and a girl who waiting him.
This manga is not the first Rurouni Kenshin spinoff manga, previously Rurouni Kenshin spinoff manga titled "Honō wo Suberu -Rurouni Kenshin: Uramaku-" (Controlling Flame -Rurouni Kenshin: Hidden Chapter-) has been released in 2014 which tell story about hishio Makoto and Yumi Komagata.
